Ramen noodles are a delicious and nutritious Asian food. We prepare these in either a chicken, pork or fish broth with miso or soy sauce flavoring. Our traditional Chinese and Japanese entrees commonly include nori (seaweed), negli (green onion) and menma – fermented bamboo shoots.

Some Asian restaurants in Austin serving cheap ramen takeout.B LooK Noodles prepares authentic Japanese cuisine with high quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Our chef cooks traditional style Japanese ramen noodle soup dishes for dine-in patrons and takeout customers. We specialize in Kyushu style Tonkotsu ramen, and also have a spicy Kimchi version with pork and an Ajitama egg. Like our other Chinese and Japanese meals, we can cook these with your choice of chicken, pork, seafood or vegetables.

All of our entrees are priced under $10! And for a small additional fee, you can order extra toppings including Chashu, Menma or Kimchi.

Spicy Kimchi Ramen – Austin’s Favorite Noodle Dish

One of our most frequently ordered meals is the Spicy Kimchi Ramen noodle soup entrée. It is popular with takeout customers as well as those dining in our restaurant. This dish is based on a miso broth and includes slices of pork, corn, menma, nori and scallions – and an Ajitama egg. The seasonings include both kimchi and chashu, so it is very zesty!

Many Austinites have an appetite for spicy food. One of the great things about having a restaurant near UT is cooking for University students and workers who really like it hot! If you enjoy fresh spicy food, you can add Kimchi to any of our Japanese ramen noodle meals for just $1.50 per serving. This is a great way to add some heat and flavor to your chicken, pork, seafood or vegetarian meal.

The History of Ramen

For many Americans – especially college students – their first encounter with ramen noodles is with a plastic wrapped package in the grocery store. This filling instant meal is a good way for a student on a budget to have a fast cheap ramen dinner. But it does not do justice to the history and quality of this nutritious Chinese-Japanese cuisine.

Most culinary experts say that ramen noodles originated in China in the 17th century. In the early 1900s the cuisine was brought to Japan where it was called shina soba. In contrast with other Chinese or Japanese noodles ramen has a rippled appearance, yellow color and firm chewy texture. These chaaceeristics are caused by the use of kansui – a combination of baking soda and water used in making the noodles.

In the intervening decades, Japanese cooks have made many innovations with ingredients and seasonings. Now there are basically five styles of ramen noodle dishes available worldwide:

  • Shoyu – Curly noodles with chicken, pork, beef or fish and flavored with a brown soy sauce broth. Usually served with seaweed, bamboo shoots and/or bean sprouts and boiled egg (Ajitama).
  • Shio – Straight noodles with a salty (shio means ‘salt) broth with chicken, seafood and vegetables. Sometimes served with Chashu instead of meat.
  • Tonkotsu – Pork bone broth with pickled ginger, sesame oil and crushed garlic. [Note: Not the same as Tonkatsu.]
  • Miso – Thick curly noodles with a nutty miso flavor, usually including chicken or fish. Frequently served with bean paste, corn, onions, chopped garlic or ground pork.
  • Curry – Soup with vegetables and pork bones, seasoned with curry. Typically served with bean sprouts, char siu (barbecued pork) or wakame (sweet seaweed).

At LooK Noodles we offer a sampling of most of the above ramen styles. If you have a favorite dish that is not on our menu, please let us know. We are always looking for new recipes and ways to make our customers happy!
